Improvisation Course

Effective improvisation requires mastering style-specific vocabulary rather than being mysterious. Jazz improvisers use recognizable "licks" (stock phrases) that fit their genre. Building a robust collection of these licks creates the foundation for developing personal expression. By learning standard phrases, you gain the freedom to connect them with your own ideas, ultimately developing a signature style. While alternative approaches exist (intuition, scales, ear training), the most successful improvisers like Stochelo and Bireli command vast repertoires of licks they can deploy anywhere, anytime. Stochelo recommends practicing individual licks thoroughly, exploring their possibilities across the instrument, combining them creatively, and composing practice solos. This approach trains reflexes and opens your mind to new connections, sometimes inspiring original phrases between established patterns.
